NEW WORK

Fatboy vs the Cheerleaders
Geoff Herbach

Available on Amazon

Gabe is having a tough week. Normally the funny kid at the lunch table, he's on edge from trying to kick his soda addiction and ditch his long-standing nickname, "Chunk." So when news breaks that his beloved marching band camp has been cancelled due to lack of funding, he's furious. What makes him even madder? The school's vending machine money—which had previous been collected by the band—is now sponsoring the new cheer squad.

The war is ON. And Gabe is leading the charge. No one will be safe from the Geekers' odd brand of wrath: not the principal, the band teacher, the local newspaper, and certainly not the cheerleaders and their jock boyfriends. Like the saying goes, it isn't over until the fat boy sings...

NEW WORK / BOOK SIGNING

Saigon Laundry
A Novel

This is the second novel from indie author Hughes Keenan and the first of a new trilogy that weaves together art, crime, fantasy and mystery during the lent season.

Born to wealth and nobility, Jack Muerce is obligated to bestow a favor that draws him into a string of grisly murders that stain the Lenten calendar as his own season for atonement and absolution unfolds. The grotesque condition of the victims’ bodies mimic a series of six famous Medieval tapestries on display at the city’s elegant fine arts museum, and earn the killer the name - The Death Weaver. As the dismembered and elaborately embroidered corpses turn up across the city, Muerce comes face-to-face with a genocidal war criminal known as the Dragon, a psychopathic plastic surgeon, a flamboyant mob boss named Titty Boy, and his own shameful demons from the past. Like the tapestries, Muerce struggles to balance the five senses of earthly desire with his chivalric duty - A mon seul desir!

Hughes Keenan will be signing books at 7pm this Thursday, March 13th, at the Leopold Gallery in Brookside, Kansas City.

NEW WEBSITE / OTB BRAND REDESIGN

Today, On The Border, launched their new website. The new site, a big improvement over the old one, was designed to coincide with their new brand identity which I was lucky to help create. New TV spots (below), logo, gift cards, catering vans, and restaurant remodeling are all major parts of the rebrand. Thanks to many others for making this happen.

Explore the new site then check out the new restaurants (sneak peak below) and new menu items.

NEW WORK

We are the Ones We Have Been Waiting For
The Promise of Civic Renewal in America

America's most serious social problems require citizen action. Traditional civic organizations have shrunk and weakened; the government ignores and sometimes frustrates constructive civic engagement. But Americans have been experimenting with new forms of active citizenship, mostly at the grassroots level. Their experiments are deliberative, convening diverse citizens to discuss goals and strategies without ideological constraints. They are collaborative, involving actual work that builds and sustains public institutions and creates public goods. And by talking and working together, these citizens build civic relationships, which are marked by virtues such as loyalty, respect, and hope.

Peter Levine is a philosopher who has been engaged with such civic renewal efforts for twenty years as a theorist, an empirical researcher and evaluator, and a participant. In this book, he offers an original theory of civic engagement, informed by political philosophy and practical experiments. He critically examines public policies that have discounted citizenship and corrupted the relationship between citizens and the state. He assembles evidence that recent efforts to renew citizenship have engaged at least one million Americans and have made tangible improvements in communities and institutions. He ends with a strategy to turn the scattered efforts at civic engagement into a broad movement for civic renewal that will tackle America's most serious social problems.
